Dynamics NAV 2013 & Expired Cronus License

We found an interesting problem – we were not able to run the development environment for Dynamics NAV 2013. Whenever we tried to run the development client, we got the following error message: “Your program license has expired” and the development client has closed (and we were not able to change the license).

As you may know, by default, there is a license file (Cronus.flf) in the root folder of the development client. This was the practice since the very first NAV (not Navision) version.

However, the NAV 2013 was the first version with a license limited to 10 years. So, NAV 2013, and we are in 2023 – the license has expired!

So what can we do? We tried to replace the Cronus.flf with our development license, but it was not successful. Fortunately, our great BC Yammer community (Hans H. Fiddelke specifically) suggested to try to use the Cronus.flf license from NAV 2015. This license is also limited to 10 years, but fortunately, it has not yet expired (it will expire next year on 08.07.2024).

And it worked! So if you encounter a similar problem with NAV 2013, download NAV 2015 from the Microsoft download center and use the Cronus.flf from NAV 2015.

Let’s hope that NAV 2016 and NAV 2017 are also compatible, as we will have a similar issue next year once the NAV 2015 license expires.
